1955 World Series

Wade Davis raises his arms in triumph as Salvy rushes out to hug and the rest of the team goes wild …….oops, wrong year, wrong league and wrong KC ..oh well, the A’s erase years of frustration as their 4th consecutive trip to the Series finally ends in victory with 6 hard fought games against homer happy Providence.

Game 1: KC 8 Providence 0
Warren Hacker tosses a 2 hit gem and the A’s score 7 runs in the 3rd and 4th as H Bauer crushes 2 HRs including a GS in the 4th.

Game 2: Providence 7 KC 1
T Byrne and 4 relievers hold the A’s in check and the Privateers score 5 runs in the 8th and 9th off the vaunted A’s bullpen including Cy Young winner W Schmidt …this becomes an issue for the rest of the series

Game 3: KC 4 Providence 3
The A’s hold on to take the first game played in the dreaded homer dome the Privateers call home. Only 1 HR was hit as V Trucks throws 6 for the win and Schmidt comes on and twirls the last 3 for his 1st save. D Donovan takes the loss giving up 9 hits and 4 runs over 5 innings.

Game 4: Providence 12 KC 11 10 innings
And what a wild one it was …the Privateers hit 6 HRs including 3 by Campy, a big one by J Adcock in the 9th with 2 runners aboard off of W Schmidt knotted it up (thank you HAL) and then a Groat error in the 10th followed by a K Boyer double gave the win to Providence. J Schmitz got the win …..and scored the winning run W Schmidt takes the loss.

Game 5: KC 8 Providence 7 10 innings
Another one not for the faint of heart. After cruising to a nice 7-2 lead after 6 innings KC watches the Privateers storm back with 5 runs in the last 3 innings to knot it all up again. W Schmidt again blows a late lead but Hammering Hank (Bauer) puts a 2 out pitch in the 10th into the cheap seats and the old man, B Feller, sets the home team down in order in the bottom half as KC regains the edge heading back to their home turf.

Game 6: KC 7 Providence 5
The A’s finally win their first championship in DOYL , but again it doesn’t come easy. They cruise to a 5-0 lead after 6 and things look good, but then Providence storms back with 4 in the top of the 7th to chase L Burdette who had been masterful up to that point. KC tacks 2 runs on in the bottom of the 8th for some breathing room and call on Schmidt. who has not had his best stuff this series, to close it out. the Privateers don’t go easy, after 2 outs a walk and 2 singles but the winning run at the plate in the form of Willie Mays but by some miracle Schmidt gets him to ground out to Groat to end the game.
